The Birches Nursing Home is a Community Governed organization that operates a 42 bed Continuing Care Centre.  The Birches is committed to the highest standards of support and services and promotes a health workplace for its 100 staff.  The organization fosters a healthy work life balance and uses the latest best practice information at all levels. The future is bright for The Birches Nursing Home with a new 48-bed facility being developed in the heart of Musquodoboit Harbour to replace the existing facility.  The new home will be completed in 2026 and this is an exciting opportunity for you to take this journey with us.

 

Job Summary:

Conducts general maintenance work, preventative maintenance and repairs, to interior and exterior of the building and equipment.  Must be able to work independently and be able to plan and request materials for related jobs.

 

General Duties:

  • Carries out minor repairs to plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc.

  • Maintains and repairs boilers, compressors, pumps, and motors, etc.

  • Carries out garbage disposal

  • Carries out ground’s maintenance (snow removal, salting, lawn maintenance)

  • Assists with moving and lifting heavy furniture and equipment

  • Responsible to maintain the basic operation of all equipment in the facility and can use all work-related equipment

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum completion of Grade Twelve (12) required

  • Community College graduate in a related field preferred, certified trade an asset

  • Must demonstrate good written and oral communication skills

  • Working knowledge of computer systems and building systems software

  • Minimum three (3) years working in general maintenance, equipment and building systems

  • Ability to attend work on a regular and consistent basis

  • Must have access to reliable transportation during off hours for on-call

Salary: In accordance with current collective agreement between The Birches Nursing Home and C.U.P.E. Local 3199.

Schedule: Must be available for rotation weekends, holidays, on-call coverage, and occasional overnight shifts
